Using this client you can instantly communicate with your friends, coworkers or with your family. This new version features this new thing that Microsoft and Yahoo! were talking about for quite a while. The v3.0 update gives you the possibility to talk to your friends who are using Microsoft's network (MSN/Windows Live!).
Not all the features work between these two networks because initially the Yahoo! implementation of the IM protocol was quite different than the one used by Microsoft. Of course, this implementation was incompatible between these two networks.
As a regular user of Yahoo! Messenger I was quite happy to test this. I can finally use images and avatars in my IM conversation windows with this release. Another thing that I like is a new redesigned interface for Mac OS X. It gives me a total new feeling about this instant messaging activity.
To be honest, I was a little shocked about the way how they redesigned the instant messages window. It looks a little bit like Skype. It isn't wrong but it just doesn't look like Yahoo! Messenger anymore.
I just don't really know why the Windows users of Yahoo! Messenger have more features. The Messages Archive is still missing from Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. Sometimes I would like to read older messages and I just can't do it. Once you close the IM window your messages are wiped out for good.
Other things that Yahoo! Messenger for Mac features: Stealth settings, Conferencing, "New IM" indicator in the OS X dock, Organize your contact list into groups and Unicode support. If you are tired about your old Yahoo! Messenger this client can brings some fresh feeling right onto your Mac OS X desktop.
Pluses: it is a pretty good IM client, it has some new features mentioned above, it was stable during the testing even though it is a beta release. The web cam broadcasting went well.
Drawbacks / flaws: it is a beta release so you might get an unexpected behavior, it doesn't have a Message Archive, it doesn't have other features that this client has for other operating systems such as: plug-ins, games, photo sharing, it uses quite many resources.
In conclusion: A pretty good update for older Yahoo! Messenger users. If you never used it, you may give it a try. Anyway, you can also try an alternative client, Adium X.
